Recap, Chapter Summary + Review: The House in the Cerulean Sea by T J. Klune

the house on the cerulean sea

Linus, a man accustomed to rules and structure and proper behavior, is wary of the children at first, but he begins to fall in love with them and their guardian as he spends more time on the island. There is romantic tension between Arthur and Linus, which Linus isn’t sure how to deal with. After further correspondence from Charles Werner, a young, attractive member of Extremely Upper Management, Linus discovers that Arthur is a phoenix who was raised on the island by one of the homes’ abusive former masters. He also discovers that Arthur and Werner were in a romantic relationship, which explains Werner’s deep interest in the orphanage. The orphanage is located on Marsyas Island, isolated from civilization other than a small town on the mainland.

Full Plot Summary

Also, if you are a cat-lover, I’m pleased to let you know that Calliope the cat makes for a pleasingly feisty side-character in this book. Linus's assignment is to assess a special orphanage on the island of Marsyas. There are six children living in the orphanage there, one of whom is called "Lucy" (short for Lucifer), who is the Antichrist.

Meanwhile, the kids are scared that Linus will take away their home, since he will be making a recommendation whether to shut down the orphanage or not. Once back in the city, Linus brashly defends Arthur, the children, and the home itself to Extremely Upper Management. He implicates Management in the discrimination and abuses of the system. Even so, they accept his recommendation that the home remain open. He quickly realizes that he is miserable and grieving the people he left behind, so he makes plans to return. First, though, he steals files from DICOMY to expose the abuses and failures he’s seen in his 17 years as a caseworker.

The House in the Cerulean Sea: an uplifting, heart-warming cosy fantasy about found family

A tightly wound caseworker is pushed out of his comfort zone when he’s sent to observe a remote orphanage for magical children. Linus becomes more confident, more willing to form emotional attachments, and more outspoken in his defense of children, magical and otherwise. As the island changes Linus, Linus has an important effect on those around him, too—for example, he encourages Arthur to bring the children to the village, setting in motion a much better relationship between the orphanage and the mainland.

Book review, full book summary and synopsis for The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune, a warm-hearted story about kids in an orphanage for magical creatures. I read this book for the first time in the early weeks of the pandemic, just after it was published, and found the sweet story to be a simply enjoyable read. I recently picked it up again to revisit the comfort of the magical house in the Cerulean Sea and fondly discovered once more why it comes so highly recommended by readers on TikTok. Travis John Klune (born May 20, 1982) is an American author of fantasy and romantic fiction featuring gay and LGBTQ+ characters.

Once he’s prepared and the orphanage is safe, Linus quits his job, packs his meager belongings, and returns to Marsyas Island. After the children hold a brief conference—and communicate a number of adorable demands—Linus is welcomed home. He and Arthur begin a romantic relationship and petition to adopt all six of the children officially. The book ends with an Epilogue in which the mayor of the town notifies them of an unregistered child in need of a home.

Early in the novel, he is unexpectedly summoned to a personal meeting with Extremely Upper Management, elusive figures that are often whispered about but rarely seen. At the meeting, Linus is given top secret clearance to review an unusual orphanage run by Arthur Parnassus. He will be sent to the orphanage for a month, during which he will send thorough weekly reports. Mr. Werner, a young, handsome member of Extremely Upper Management, warns Linus to “beware” and to leave no detail out of his reports. My absolute favorite part of this book is the appearance of one magical child named Lucy, who is (quite literally) the son of Satan. I recall thinking it had a great title and really lovely cover (see notes about the making of that cover here), but it wasn’t until I started seeing positive reviews of it from people I know that it really popped on my radar.

It's a creatively told story about real-life themes of belonging and chosen family.

Linus Baker is a lonely case worker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth ("DICOMY"), a governmental organization which manages orphaned magical beings who are minors. His job consists of visiting orphanages to check up on them and then writing up a report. One day, he's called in by the organization's Extremely Upper Management ("EUM") to serve on a month-long classified assignment, reporting directly to one of the four members of EUM, Mr. Charles Werner. At the end of the day, this is a fantasy novel that can satisfy many readers, even if they're not usually fantasy fans.

With heartwarming characters, a comforting aesthetic, and a mind-blowing ending, it's a thoroughly enjoyable read from cover to cover. Linus Baker is a by-the-book case worker in the Department in Charge of Magical Youth. He's tasked with determining whether six dangerous magical children are likely to bring about the end of the world.

He is also able to break through to Sal, a traumatized shapeshifter recovering from previous abuse. Linus himself is a serious, solitary man with a preference for order and clarity. He is cautious in life and careful with his words, making him particularly well suited for the inflexible structure of DICOMY.

It is populated by Arthur Parnassus, the children, and Zoe, an island sprite whose powers are tremendous and closely linked to the island. The town on the mainland is openly hostile towards magical beings, and relations between the townspeople and the orphanage are strained. This tension is exacerbated by the extremity of the children’s magical natures. One of the children, Lucy, is listed in his files as the Antichrist, or the son of the Devil. Among the other children are a wyvern, a gnome, a forest sprite, a shapeshifter, and a gelatinous, tentacled child named Chauncey. Linus Baker is a case worker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth (DICOMY), a governmental agency that monitors the behavior and well-being of magical children living in orphanages and group homes.

'the House in the Cerulean Sea' Review: Why TikTok Loves This Fantasy Book

Luo has no idea why he was chosen, but, nonetheless, the Trisolarans seem determined to kill him. The plot’s development centers on Liu’s dark and rather gloomy but highly persuasive philosophy, with dazzling ideas and an unsettling, nonlinear, almost nonnarrative structure that demands patience but offers huge rewards. Today, #thehouseintheceruleansea has over 3.9 million views on TikTok, over 22,000 dedicated posts on Instagram, and a staggering 4.45 average rating across over 292,000 reviews on Goodreads. He would do anything to keep the children safe, even if it means the world will burn.

For select classroom titles, we also provide Teaching Guides with discussion and quiz questions to prompt student engagement. The children are truly what makes this novel so enjoyable and what colors Linus' usually tedious and tiresome life. As the home has been visited by caseworkers in the past, its inhabitants are worried about what Linus' presence could mean.

There’s a wide range of mythical, magical beings, but we don’t really see them showcasing the full spectrum of their abilities. It’s understandable, since that’s not what the book is really about, but I’m just someone who likes that kind of stuff. When Linus goes to investigate, Arthur tells Linus that he grew up in a DICOMY orphanage and was abused. When he tried to ask the DICOMY for help, the master of the orphanage intercepted the letter and locked Arthur in the cellar.

From the Remembrance of Earth's Past series

This time, with the Trisolarans a few years into their voyage, physicist Ye Wenjie (whose reminiscences drove much of the action in the last book) visits astronomer-turned-sociologist Luo Ji, urging him to develop her ideas on cosmic sociology. The Planetary Defense Council, meanwhile, in order to combat the powerful escapist movement (they want to build starships and flee so that at least some humans will survive), announces the Wallfacer Project. Four selected individuals will be accorded the power to command any resource in order to develop plans to defend Earth, while the details will remain hidden in the thoughts of each Wallfacer, where even the sophons can't reach. To combat this, the ETO creates Wallbreakers, dedicated to deducing and thwarting the plans of the Wallfacers. The chosen Wallfacers are soldier Frederick Tyler, diplomat Manuel Rey Diaz, neuroscientist Bill Hines, and—Luo Ji.

She helps to take care of the children in an unofficial capacity. Linus is scared of the children at first, but soon sees that they act much like other kids. Arthur tells Linus that people see the kids as being threats, but actually the kids can be anything they choose to be.

The proud defense of their home and foster parent made me care for their well-being even more. Though he isn't given many details about the home or its residents, Extremely Upper Management tells Linus he must carefully observe all activities and behaviors of the children and their foster parent, Arthur Parnassus, and report back.

One day, he's given a secret assignment to assess a special orphanage on the island of Marsyas, run by a man named Arthur Parnassus, who has secrets of his own. Among the six unique children living there, one of them is Lucy, short for Lucifer, who just happens to be the Antichrist. "The House in the Cerulean Sea" is a beautiful fantasy story that begins with Linus Baker, a caseworker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth, who has just been assigned a top-secret case. Linus is chosen for his strict rule-following and thorough reports, so he's charged with investigating a peculiar foster home of magical children. The House in the Cerulean Sea is an enchanting love story, masterfully told, about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place―and realizing that family is yours.

Some of these children have powers such as telekinesis, and some are from non-human species, many of which we would consider mythological. Linus’s job is to follow up on incident reports and make suggestions regarding the fate of the children and the homes. It’ll warm your heart and perhaps even bring tears to your eyes.

The House in the Cerulean Sea Audiobook Review

As soon as Linus's recommendation to keep the orphanage open is accepted, he know it's where he wants to be. Later, Linus submits an anonymous whistleblower report about the DICOMY's discriminatory practices which results in the EUM all stepping down and being replaced. He also tells his story to a reporter who plans to publish an expose. Soon, Helen brings David, an undocumented yeti boy who needs a home, to the island. Arthur and Linus intend to formally adopt all the children, including David.

An enchanting story, masterfully told, The House in the Cerulean Sea is about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place―and realizing that family is yours. This is a fairly simple and “neat” story, probably more suited to people who enjoy YA novels, but I think as long as you’re aware of that going into it, you can enjoy its sweet and uncomplicated tale. I think I’m just someone who tends to prefer more layered novels in general, so this wasn’t entirely to my tastes. The House in the Cerulean Sea is an uncomplicated feel-good book that is full of fantastical creatures and tells a well-meaning, upbeat story about acceptance and inclusivity. It’s the type of book that reminds you of being outside on a sunny day with a cool breeze blowing through. There is a very sweet (queer) romance component to this novel, which I thought was cute.

His fantasy novel The House in the Cerulean Sea is a New York Times best seller and winner of the 2021 Alex and Mythopoeic Awards. Klune has spoken about how his asexuality influences his writing. His novel Into This River I Drown won the Lambda Literary Award for Best Gay Romance in 2014. At times I found it a little too black-and-white for my tastes, with saintly “good” characters, villainous “bad” characters and pretty much no one in-between. While sweet and upbeat, The House in the Cerulean Sea was lacking in dramatic tension for me, since it was always quite clear how the story would play out. There's also Zoe Chapelwhite, an undocumented, adult island sprite who has lived on the island since before the orphanage.

He goes back to the office and makes a recommendation to allow the orphanage to stay open. He also accuses the DICOMY of running discriminatory orphanages by segregating out the magical beings. In previous assignments, Linus had prided himself on being detached and viewing the children's fates as outside the scope of his responsibility, but on Marsyas, Linus finds his objectivity slipping away. He also starts to develop romantic feelings toward Arthur, which are reciprocated.

Lambda Literary Award–winning author Klune (The Art of Breathing, 2019, etc.) has a knack for creating endearing characters, and readers will grow to love Arthur and the orphans alongside Linus. Linus himself is a lovable protagonist despite his prickliness, and Klune aptly handles his evolving feelings and morals. The prose is a touch wooden in places, but fans of quirky fantasy will eat it up. The House in the Cerulean Sea is a queer fantasy novel by TJ Klune, Lambda Award-winning author of The Extraordinaires and the Green Creek series. The House in the Cerulean Sea was published in March of 2020 and made the USA Today bestseller list. Klune is a queer author whose works often explore supernatural elements.

How Much Does It Really Cost to Build a House?

how much it cost to build a house

Are utilities already in place on the land where the house will be built? If so, you’re in luck and will only have to identify their locations. New construction gives you the ability to customize the home from top to bottom, but upgrades can be expensive. Interior finishes, which include flooring, drywall and cabinet installation, can account for more than 25% of construction costs, according to the NAHB. The average new-construction home size is around 2,200 square feet, and the total average construction cost is $281,000. On a national average, a new roof typically costs $10,000 to install.

Average Construction Cost

However, the results are a house that is exactly what you want that functions precisely the way you want it to. These homes require a residential architect, which will add 5 percent to 15 percent to the total construction cost. All told, the materials to build a house will make up approximately 50 percent of the total cost. This means, however, that the builder’s selections have the power to influence that overall cost. For example, vinyl siding costs about $2 per square foot, while custom stone can ring up at more than $30 per square foot. It’s possible to make economical selections on materials without sacrificing safety or appearance to save money or spend it on other priorities.

Once the skeleton is built, all the necessary external elements of the walls, roofs and openings will be installed. This means exterior finishes like the siding will be put up on the walls, then windows and doors will be put in, after which the roof will be sheathed – covered in roofing felt and nailed-on shingles. Once you’ve got your land, your general contractor and subcontractors will start preparing to build the house. This stage includes purchasing all the necessary permits and having an architect draw up floor plans for the home. You’ll need to take into account a number of key points to estimate the true cost of building a new home.

Contractor(s) And Labor

If you’re working with limited funds to create your dream home, use the following tips to save without sacrificing your vision or quality. Installing trim throughout a house will cost about $1,500 on average. To strike the best balance between pricing and quality of workmanship, research several local finishing carpenters to compare quotes and reviews. These permits tend to cost between $1,200 and $2,000, but the actual amount varies depending on the regulations in the local area. Alternatively, you can purchase a stock blueprint online for as little as $500.

This professional will be leading the task to create not only your dream home but your biggest investment. If you’re still on the fence about building a new home, here are some frequently asked questions about the homebuilding process. At this point, the frame is up, and the structure is beginning to look like a real house. To make it feel like a real house, it needs to be brought to life with water, air, and electrical power. Rough plumbing and HVAC systems will need to be installed, and a skilled electrician will get your home hooked up to the local power grid. The following outline is a step-by-step process to build a new home with the costs broken down by phase of construction.

Once built, you or your contractor will schedule a final inspection to obtain a certificate of occupancy. This is the official document that verifies that all work on the home was done to code and the structure is safe for people to live in. For the most peace of mind, select a contractor who has adequate insurance to cover the project through all phases of construction. Another option in this arena is to purchase a new prefabricated tiny home. Simple Terra offers a 1-bedroom container home with 320 square feet of interior space and a 160-square-foot outdoor covered deck for $38,000. Poulos also cautions that a lot of skill is involved, especially in using professional-grade paint sprayers on outdoor jobs.

You’re our first priority.Every time.

Homes with greater square footage will cost more than those of a smaller size, as shown in the following table. If you have the time and ability, consider painting your own interior rooms to save up to $10,000. Think about ways to make the move-in process a family project and make a custom kitchen table or fireplace surround together and build special memories of this happy occasion. If your lot has an existing home on it, demolition costs can range between $3,000 and $25,000.

Build a Budget Before You Build Your New Home

The home builder your agent connects you with should be able to walk you through the expected costs and timeline in detail. Your agent can also work with you to identify suitable vacant lots or tear-down opportunities. Your new house will also need new appliances, like a refrigerator, dishwasher, and washer/dryer. If it’s your first time buying large appliances, it’s a good idea to check out price ranges, so you can add these items to your calculations. Your interior and exterior finishes will have a huge impact on your budget when constructing your dream home.

These homes typically cost about $100 to $200 per square foot, which translates to an average of $300,000 for a 2,000-square-foot home. The amount of lot preparation required also needs to be calculated into your building costs, which HomeAdvisor estimates between $1,300 to $5,100. This can include expenses such as soil testing, land excavation, grading, and surveyor fees. The decision to build a home instead of buying one is up to you and what you’re looking to spend financially. While building a home is the best way to create your dream home, it could get expensive and take a long time.

how much it cost to build a house

The difference is that a HELOC acts more like a credit card than a lump-sum loan, and you’ll be able to borrow from the line of credit as needed, up to the amount that you’re approved for. You probably won’t come close to financing the entire cost of building a house with a personal loan — the loan amount will be capped for most people at much less than the cost of a house. You may have to be creative to keep costs down depending on your vision. Choosing prefabricated home kits over custom elements and building on a finished lot can significantly cut costs. You should still be able to build a two- or three-bedroom home, especially if you opt for mid-range appliances, stock cabinets and other budget furnishings. When it comes to financing new home construction, most people don’t have the entire lump sum of cash on hand to pay for the project outright.

how much it cost to build a house

Land in a rural, undeveloped area will be much less expensive than land in a densely-populated urban or suburban area. And if it feels like you can’t find a home that speaks to you, you may be considering building your dream home instead of buying an existing home that doesn’t check all your required boxes. Jonathan is a REALTOR® and a former journalist and insurance salesperson.

It’s best to survey your options and do your own research before making your final decision. Choosing to build a green home can significantly change the construction budget depending on the elements that you plan to include. Generally, it is more costly to build a green home, but costs less to operate.

how much it cost to build a house

New home construction costs $100 to $155 per square foot on average with most homeowners paying $155,000 to $416,250, in addition to the cost of your land. Costs vary considerably based on location and all your choices in design and interior and exterior finishes. The average cost of building a house shown above accounts for as much as 60% of the whole process cost. Hiring a professional interior designer to make your home look magazine-worthy with top-notch finishes, materials, and details can also mean an additional 10-15% depending on labor costs and types of materials.

Interior Finishing

Your precise cost will vary depending on factors like the region where you want to live, the square footage you have in mind, and the materials used to build. There’s also a price difference between a custom home and a production build, where developers have planned subdivisions with various lots and floor plans to choose from. If you use an online cost-to-build-a-house calculator, you’ll notice that construction materials and labor combined account for about 90% of the typical budget. These broad categories can be broken down into many distinct categories to give you a better sense of where your money will go in a project. The remaining 10% covers minor cost factors like site preparation, interior and exterior finishes and optional add-ons such as a finished basement or outdoor spaces.

When you create a budget, you not only know how much you can spend but also how you will spend it. Labor costs in Los Angeles have increased steadily, primarily due to the labor shortages induced by the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting lockdowns. Presently, labor costs are higher than in 2021 and 2019, amounting to around 30% to 60% of the total construction budget.

This guide will help you lay out your budget and anticipate costs that you will encounter throughout the home building process. If you want to have the most accurate picture of how much it costs to build a home, it is best to talk to a contractor and get an estimate for your particular needs. The installation of plumbing and electrical systems comprise a majority of the costs of a new custom home. In addition to size, the type of system greatly affects the cost as each has disparate installation times and requires different levels of expertise.

These smaller projects are frequently overlooked – but that doesn’t make them any less important or expensive. Plan on spending between $5,000 and $10,000 for basic outdoor additions like a driveway or landscaping. Just like you can take out a loan to buy a house, you can get a land loan to buy undeveloped land or finance the purchase of a vacant lot that’s developed and prepped for construction.

Meanwhile, other costs that should be considered are site preparation, utility lines, government fees and mandates, and finance costs—which can reach around 40%. The cost of building a house is highly variable, dependent on the cost of land, total square footage, permits, and extra fees. Truly custom homes can cost as much as the home builder has to spend. Custom and luxury homes will generally average out to $300 to $500 per square foot, and these homes tend to be larger, so building costs are high—as are the costs of fit and finishing.

Even if you’re just day-dreaming at this point, it’s never too early to ask a local real estate agent for advice on building a house. You can also get a construction-only loan that covers the costs of construction and then, once the project is completed, apply for a traditional mortgage to pay off the construction loan. If you don’t have the cash to fund this project, what you’ll need is a home construction loan.

If time is a critical factor in your decision process, then building a house may not be the right choice for you. You also need to consider the finished lot cost, financing, overhead, marketing, sales commission, and profit. Single-family home prices skyrocketed in 2020 as people moved out of apartments and into individual houses, looking for more space during pandemic lockdowns. In this post, we’ll break these costs down for you, show you some estimates by square foot, and give you examples of what you can afford with your budget. Read our guide to learn how to secure a land loan, the pros and cons of this loan type and more. Let’s answer some frequently asked questions regarding how much it costs to build a house.

If you’ve determined that the price of construction is worth it, your next step is to explore your financing options for a new-home build. There are several options available, and many offer competitive interest rates and attractive incentives. The infrastructure that heats your house and provides water and electricity is essential.

Home Advisor didn't factor this expense in, but it's nonnegotiable. The cost will vary based on where you live, but on average people spend $20,000 to $200,000 on land. If you take out a construction-only loan to finance building your new home, you’ll need to refinance the loan once construction is complete.

Plus, you’ll have a fun conversation starter to share during your housewarming party. Before you break ground, you’ll have to present your plans and request a building permit from your municipality. There's an application fee, which varies from one city and state to the next, and it’s usually a set cost per finished value. From there, the permit will cost between $1,200 and $2,000, also depending on your area. One of the easiest steps to DIY (and overlook), paint is an easy to place to save.

A layer of brick over the wood frame costs about $35,000 for a 2,000-square-foot house. A brick or solid-masonry house has a brick frame rather than one made of wood. Finding a stonemason to build this can be nigh impossible, as these types of homes have not been developed for about fifty years.

Other features of the Ken-ified dreamhouse include a cowboy-themed salon, an observation deck with a telescope overlooking the ocean, an outdoor bar and grill, an outdoor gym and a deck with a fire pit. Pacific Time, anyone can request to book Barbie’s Malibu Dreamhouse on Airbnb. The company will select four lucky guests (two per night) to spend a night at the oceanfront villa for free on July 21 and 22. At the centre of the building, on one of the house's many terraces, guests can make use of an outside disco dance floor in pink, purple and yellow with its own DJ deck. Airbnb announced it is giving away a pair of one-night stays next month at the Dream House, which is privately owned and operated and not normally used for Airbnb rentals, the company said. The newly renovated Malibu dream house sports Barbie’s signature pink polish, this time with a revamped Kenergy. As such, there are not only all of the mod-cons you might expect from a Barbie Dreamhouse—an infinity pool, a bar, a home gym with ocean views, and enough pink to put Pepto-Bismol out of business—but a few of Ken’s touches, too. Notably, you can “feel the Kenergy” by trying out the skates and surfboards he might have left around the house. You can channel your inner cowboy with a line dance on the light-up disco dance floor, or simply laze by the pool and top up your Ken-worthy tan.

Videos and images of a mysterious Barbie house gained attention online Sunday, when a local news helicopter spotted the house from the sky. The house is by El Pescador State Beach in Western Malibu, a beach community known for wealthy residents and high-end homes—neighboring houses to the east and west of the house are estimated to be worth more than $5.2 million, according to Zillow. There’s also an outdoor disco area, perfect for a choreographed dance party with a bespoke song. The real estate firm evaluated the average sale price of comparable homes with similar amenities, and then added a 10% “premium” due to the home’s one-of-a-kind appearance and appeal. “We all have dreams, and Barbie is lucky enough to have a house full of them,” Ken said Monday in a statement. The film was recently in the news as it made "the world run out of pink", while a recent book explored Barbie's Dreamhouse through the ages.

Eight home interiors where mezzanines maximise usable space

PT, everyone in Barbie Land can request to book Ken’s room in Barbie’s DreamHouse at airbnb.com/kendreamhouse for two individual one-night stays for up to two guests. Selected winners will stay at the pink mansion in Malibu on July 21 and July 22, free of charge, to indulge in all the Kenergy that revamped beach home has the offer. “With panoramic ocean views and beachy, glamorous decor, the home is a larger-than-life recreation of Barbie’s signature style and hospitality,” added Airbnb.

Photos and memorabilia from the doll’s history will be plastered throughout the space, too. Hanging inside a massive walk-in closet are Barbie-style clothes – including several uniforms that catalog her fashions over the last 60 years. Styles include white cat-eye sunglasses, an astronaut suit, a striped bathing suit, and lots of high heels. In addition to relaxing alongside the infinity pool that boasts uninterrupted views of the Pacific Ocean, the guests will be able to unwind in a stone-clad bathtub with windows that look out over the California hills or spend time painting in Barbie’s hobby room. There are two one-night stays available for up to two guests each on July 21 and July 22, so a total of four guests can stay at the house. Ken’s rollerblades rest somewhere on the disco ball-lit dance floor—maybe I’d try those on too, if I wasn’t so afraid I’d fall and crack my head open.

The house brings the spirit of the toy Dreamhouse to life, with a plethora of pink decor and odes to Barbie’s history throughout the home. Inside the bedroom—which only has one free-standing door, a saloon-esque entryway painted with horses—Ken has really let his western flag fly. Cowboy hats sit in a crown above the still-Barbie pink velvet bed, though a new cow-print duvet rests upon the mattress. Barbie’s vanity has been invaded by cologne (engraved with the year 1961, when Mattel released the Ken doll), Ken’s plastic keys, and other fun trinkets.

Outside, Ken (who’s not there, but he’s left a bunch of his stuff behind) is grilling some plastic chicken and steak on his fake barbecue. A human-sized barbecue is also tucked into the pink outdoor oasis, which is less decorated than the open-air bedroom right beside the patio. Select Barbie fans got to experience life in the dreamhouse when Airbnb unveiled the latest iteration of Barbie’s Malibu Dreamhouse ahead of the movie’s worldwide release. The overnight stays are timed to the July 21 release of the “Barbie” movie, which stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken. Earlier this month, Airbnb revealed that guests can sign up to stay at the life-sized doll house, free of charge, as part of a promotion by Mattel.

The oversized lounge chairs make the space ideal for soaking up some California sun, and the Barbie lifeguard stand and pink umbrellas add to the ambiance. Decking out this Dreamhouse to make it look like Barbie’s Malibu property, as well as bringing on all of these experts and celebrities, is clearly an expensive endeavor for Airbnb. KTLA got to tour the dreamhouse, which was hosted by Ken this time around. The Malibu DreamHouse will be available to book for two separate, overnight stays for up to two people on July 21 and July 22, 2023. It’s important to note that the home isn’t actively for sale and is privately owned, so any speculation about its price is just that.

The ground floor is, by far, the most intricate, pink, and best out of the mansion’s three floors. The infinity pool flows out, rolling over the hills, and—if you squint—it appears to be part of the ocean. Those “KEN” balloons spotted in Airbnb’s original listing were gone by the time I visited, but a mass of floaties tumbled around in the water instead. A pink slide spirals into the pool, but it comes just short of the actual water. If you were to slide down, you’d land on your butt; in the movie, Barbie floats down and walks on top of the water. I got a special, early chance to slide into Ken’s new infinity pool and take Barbie’s pink convertible for a spin.

malibu barbie house

I wish I’d invited some friends to throw on the Barbie soundtrack (or some horse noises?) and dance the night away. Fans could stay in Ken’s bedroom for two individual one-night stays for up to two guests each until Friday. Malibu-based luxury real estate company RubyHome, has put the home’s price tag at $10 million — significantly higher than the estimates from the online real estate portals. Estimates from the usual real estate listing sites vary pretty wildly. Zillow gives the home an estimated price tag of $5,347,400, Redfin‘s estimates comes in at $3,491,022, and Realtor.com give the most optimistic estimate at $7,277,000. Obviously, oceanfront property in one of America’s most desired enclaves is going to cost a pretty penny.

Lindsay Lowe has been a regular contributor to TODAY.com since 2016, covering pop culture, style, home and other lifestyle topics. She is also working on her first novel, a domestic drama set in rural Regency England. The stays are free of charge, although Airbnb notes that guests will need to arrange their own transportation to and from Malibu. But now, the oceanfront home has been renovated to fully embrace all things pink and Barbie.

The house also features an outdoor sports court, where guests will be given a one-on-one fencing lesson from Olympic fencing medalist Ibtihaj Muhammad, who has a Barbie doll made in her likeness. Ibtihaj Muhammad made history as the first American woman to compete in the Olympics while wearing a hijab. Ibtihaj Muhammad was the first Muslim American woman to wear a hijab while representing the United States during the Olympics, and Barbie made a “Shero” doll in her honor. According to Airbnb, Muhammad will give each Dreamhouse guest a fencing lesson. The Barbie dollhouse opens to reveal so many play spaces and double-the-fun features. Kids can make the 2-story, 2-foot wide dollhouse their own with more than 25 pieces to decorate its 6 rooms – transformation elements bring even more possibilities into the playset.

Every kid’s dream of staying over in Barbie’s iconic Malibu Dreamhouse just became a reality. Visitors will have the opportunity to fence on the residence’s rooftop with Olympic fencing medalist Ibtihaj Muhammad, who was recently made into the brand’s first hijab-wearing doll. The slide led to a fake, toy-styled pool, and the “convertible” was really just a golf cart that led me up a long, winding hill past the gates and into Barbie’s dream world. The hot pink wonderland is full of fun details, including an infinity pool with “Ken” pool floats, a pink waterslide and plenty of Ken and Barbie-approved accessories, from surfboards to a life-size horse. A life-size replica of Barbie’s hot pink house in Malibu, California, will be available to book for two individual one-night stays this summer, Airbnb announced June 26. The large oceanfront house features a pink bedroom decorated with cowhide rugs, cowboy hats and horse-printed throws as well as a closet from which guests can borrow Ken's fringed cowboy shirts and his guitar. Rental website Airbnb has created Barbie's Malibu Dreamhouse, an all-pink California mansion with an outdoor disco, infinity pool and Western-themed bedroom. Gina Clarke-Helm, a former model, celebrity chef, and the owner of Malibu Seaside Chef, will give guests a private, gourmet cooking lesson, providing them with an idea of what Barbie might like to make, according to Airbnb.

"We all have dreams, and Barbie is lucky enough to have a house full of them," Ken said. "But now, it's my turn, and I can't wait to host guests inside these one-of-a-kind – dare I say, one-of-a-Ken? – digs." While guests are welcome to explore Barbie’s closet and all of the rooms, they are asked to treat the property like any other Airbnb spot and leave her belongings alone.

Airbnb arranges to celebrate the 60th anniversary of iconic barbie house malibu in California from October 27 to October 29 in 2019, courtesy of a partnership with Mattel and they allow at a time 4 guests for two-night. The oceanfront mansion, located in Malibu, California, features panoramic views and "serves as the perfect backdrop for Ken’s picture-plastic paradise," according to a statement from Airbnb. The company also says “everyone in Barbie Land” can request to book Ken’s room in the Malibu DreamHouse beginning July 17 at 10 a.m. “While it certainly won’t be to everyone’s taste, the 3,500-square-foot space, views of the Pacific Ocean, private pool, and totally unique design result in a hefty price tag for the property,” said Tony Mariotti, CEO of RubyHome. Airbnb announced Monday that the hot-pink, beach-side mansion inspired by the toy home of the same name will be available to book for a limited time next month — with a twist.

The ‘Barbie’ film used so much pink paint that it depleted the global reserves of its supplier, Rosco, which were already limited by supply chain issues. Airbnb users will soon have the opportunity to live in a Barbie world. Mattel has listed its Malibu Dreamhouse to celebrate the doll’s 60th anniversary.

But a gaudy manor inspired by the stylistic choices of a fashionista children’s doll is a bit of an unprecedented sale. The property rental company and Warner Bros. have joined forces to promote “Barbie” — the summer comedy starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling — by inviting “everyone in Barbie Land” to enter for a chance to win a one-night stay at the luxury estate. Some of Barbie's clothing, including the iconic high-heeled pink shoe with a fluffy feather decoration from the movie, also hang in the closet.

The oversized Barbie stereo doesn’t actually work, but it will look amazing in a poolside selfie. Visitors will have to share beds if they have more than two visitors at their party. It wouldn’t be Barbie’s house if pink wasn’t the focal point of her decor. The stays are free of charge, according to Airbnb, but guests are responsible for their own travel to and from Malibu. Up to four guests will have the opportunity to stay in the newly revamped Dreamhouse where Ken will offer up his room up for availability.

The real-life Barbie DreamHouse is reopening its doors in Malibu soon — but this time, the three-story Airbnb promises big Kenergy. The seaside property with panoramic views first went up for rent in 2019, and Ken has redecorated the bright pink pad ahead of Greta Gerwig’s highly-anticipated Barbie film. The walk-in closet comes with clothes from Barbie’s many careers over the years. The pink accessory wall highlights an array of careers from Barbie’s past, like Nascar Driver, Police Officer, and CEO Boss.

To celebrate the release, Airbnb will make a one-time donation to Save the Children, an organization providing learning resources and support to children, families and communities in support of girls’ confidence. Mattel ran a fictional listing of Barbie’s Malibu Dream House in 2013 on Trulia, including a legitimate real estate agent for the campaign. Margot Robbie was recently spotted toting SteamLine Luggage’s retro carry-on suitcase ($550) and hat box in very on-brand powder pink while promoting Barbie in her native Australia.

For the truly committed, you can even dress up like Ken, thanks to a fully-stocked closet bursting with beach-ready looks. The pretty, pink, oceanfront property boasts an infinity pool sans waterslide, an in-house movie theater, a meditation space, Barbie’s office, a fully stocked kitchen, two bedrooms, and two bathrooms. Not to mention her fully stocked iconic closet with 60-years of fashion and styles from each of her careers.

Along with living the Barbie life, up to four guests can also try out a myriad of activities that draw on the careers of varieties of the doll, such as fencing, exploring outer space, and crafting. “The quintessential Dreamhouse will bring to life what drives Barbie, from spotlighting powerful and diverse role models to showcasing underrepresented career paths and giving all girls a voice,” Mattel said. There’s an infinity pool in the backyard with pink and white beach balls, along with pink deck chairs, since there is nothing Barbie loves more than sunning herself in a bikini.

The real-life version of Barbie’s Malibu DreamHouse is available for a limited number of overnight stays this summer on Airbnb — and while Barbie is busy promoting the upcoming “Barbie” movie, Ken is taking over hosting duties. The massive compound features a massive pool and waterslide, a dance floor, several Barbie-inspired bedrooms and plenty of pink. The Dreamhouse also has a bright-pink outdoor lounging area, an outdoor gym – complete with a barrel filled with "beefy body brine" –  a pink outdoor kitchen with a barbecue and an infinity pool. The home previously was listed on Airbnb in October 2019 for $60 a night for Barbie’s 60th anniversary. The recent relisting adds to an already extensive marketing campaign for Barbie, director Greta Gerwig’s live-action film, which will premiere in theaters next month with a $100 million budget. Airbnb is also making a one-time donation to Save the Children, a non-profit organization, “to build girls’ confidence and help them excel in school,” according to Airbnb.
